Education for Homless Children and Youth: McKinney- Vento Act

District Homeless Liaison: Mrs. Tackmann

Children and youth experiencing homelessness face unique barriers to accessing and succeeding in school. If your family is experiencing one of the following situations, please contact your district homeless liaison for more information regarding educational supports and rights.

  • Lacking a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence, which includes:
    • Sharing the housing of others due to loss of housing, economic hardship or similar reason; doubled up. 
    • Living in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or camping grounds due to the lack of adequate accomodations. 
    • Living in emergency or transitional shelters, or are abandoned in hospitals.
    • Primary nighttime residence is a public or private place not designed for regular sleeping of human beings.
    • Living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, bus or train stations, or similar.
    • Migratory children.

Educational Rights of Homeless Children and Youth and their Families:

  • Continue the student's education in the school of origin for the duration of homelessness or the rest of the academic school year, keeping the best interest of the student(s) in mind.
  • Immediate enrollment into school without previous academic records, immunications, health records, proof of residency, or other documentation.
  • Transportation to school of origin as coordinated by the school of origin and residency districts. 
  • Access to free meals, Title I services, educational program, extra-curricular activities, support services as needed.
