Every student planning to attend a post-secondary institution must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This application is needed for scholarships, grants, work-study and loans to assist paying for college. The application opens October 1 of each year to be completed for the following school year. To fill out the application online go to fafsa.gov.

Before completing the FAFSA, you must create an FSA ID. This is a username and password that gives you access to U.S Department of Education websites, as well as an electronic signature on your FAFSA. If you are a parent of a dependent student, you must create your own FSA ID. This can be used for multiple children and should be reused each year when completing the FAFSA.

Prior to making a FSA ID and completing the FAFSA make sure you have the following items for the student and parent:

  • Prior prior year taxes (2017 taxes for 2019 FAFSA)
  • Social security number
  • Valid email address
  • Phone number
